Background of the Study

Water pollution has significant consequences for aquatic ecosystems and the livelihoods of communities that rely on water bodies for fishing and other economic activities (Dogo et al., 2024). In Yauri Local Government Area, Kebbi State, the pollution of water sources has increasingly become a concern due to industrial waste, agricultural runoff, and improper disposal of domestic waste (Usman et al., 2023). Fishing is a key economic activity for many residents of Yauri, providing both food and income. However, as water quality deteriorates, the availability of fish decreases, and the health risks associated with consuming contaminated fish increase (Balarabe & Sani, 2025). Despite the critical importance of fishing to the local economy, there has been limited research on the impact of water pollution on the fishing industry in Yauri. This study aims to assess how water pollution affects fishing activities in Yauri, focusing on the implications for fish populations, local fishermen, and the community's overall well-being.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Water pollution in Yauri Local Government Area has negatively impacted fishing activities, yet the specific effects on the local fishing industry have not been adequately studied. This study will explore how pollution has affected fish stocks, the income of fishermen, and the health of the local community. It also aims to evaluate the environmental and socio-economic consequences of polluted water sources on fishing in Yauri.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

• To assess the impact of water pollution on fish stocks in Yauri Local Government Area.

• To examine the effect of water pollution on the livelihoods of local fishermen in Yauri.

• To identify potential strategies for mitigating the impact of water pollution on fishing activities in Yauri.

1.4 Research Questions

• How has water pollution affected fish stocks in Yauri Local Government Area?

• What are the socio-economic impacts of water pollution on fishing activities in Yauri?

• What strategies can be implemented to mitigate the impact of water pollution on fishing in Yauri?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

• H1: Water pollution has a significant negative impact on fish stocks in Yauri Local Government Area.

• H2: Water pollution has led to a decline in the income of local fishermen in Yauri.

• H3: There is a significant relationship between water pollution and the availability of fish in Yauri.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant because it will provide valuable data on the effects of water pollution on the fishing industry in Yauri (Balarabe & Sani, 2025). By understanding the specific ways in which water pollution affects fish stocks and the livelihoods of fishermen, the study will offer recommendations for mitigating the impact of pollution and improving the sustainability of the fishing industry. The findings will also be useful for policymakers, environmental organizations, and local communities in developing strategies to protect water resources and promote sustainable fishing practices in the region.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on Yauri Local Government Area and will investigate the impact of water pollution on fishing activities within this specific region. The research will examine both the environmental and socio-economic effects of water pollution, but it will not include other forms of pollution or environmental issues outside of water quality.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

• Water Pollution: The contamination of water bodies with harmful substances, such as chemicals, waste, and pathogens, that degrade water quality and affect aquatic life.

• Fishing Activities: The practices involved in catching fish for food or commercial purposes, including fishing techniques, equipment, and markets.

• Fish Stocks: The population of fish in a particular water body available for fishing.
